Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my child is new to volleyball or new to travel clubs?

If your child is new to the sport, Next Revolution offers a Developmental Program for players ages 12 and Under to learn fundamental volleyball skills.  If you are new to travel volleyball, speak to a board member, coach, or parents that have experience with travel volleyball.

Our travel teams have two options based on player skill level; Black (Open) Royal (Club) and usually have a season that runs from December through April with multiple practices per week. Our Black teams will also participate in either USAV or AAU Nationals in June and will take a small break until mid May after their final tournaments.

Participating in travel volleyball is a commitment which will mean attending tournaments on the weekends (a combination of single day and multi-day tournaments).  Single day tournaments are typically an all day event depending on format, while multi-day tournaments usually require going out of town beginning Friday evening through either Sunday or Monday (depending if the tournament is a 2 or 3 day tournament). Some tournaments that are three days can also begin on Saturday and end on Mondays.

Travel costs associated with out of town tournaments are NOT included in projected team fees. This includes travel, lodging and food.

How do I know which age group my child should play in?

The tryouts page includes a definition of player age groups based on date of birth.

Players are allowed to select one age group higher than they would be based on their birth date ie a player who should play 13's for their season could choose to tryout for 14's if they believe their skill level is high enough.

In a rare occasion if the club feels a player is able to play higher than one age group then the board would contact their parent/guardian to discuss the options.

When are tryouts usually held?

Tryouts are generally held in the month of September and October with the Open and Club/Non Travel levels separated.

How often do teams practice?

Teams will hold scheduled practices at a minimum two times per week. Coaches may decide to supplement their schedule with an additional practice on occasion or may decide to begin their season holding three practices a week throughout the first month of the season. Practice times are generally either 5:30-7:00 or 7:00-9:00.

How is a team's schedule determined?

Next Revolution's directors select common schedules for our Open, Club, Amethyst and Developmental level teams. Some Open teams may have select tournaments based on the team's talent level and players who are looking to play at the collegiate level and need recruiting opportunities.

How many players are on a team?

The number of players on a team can vary however generally have between 10-12 players. A total cost is calculated for each team depending on numerous factors such as tournament schedule/entry cost, length of season, player gear package, number of coaches, travel expenses for coaches, etc.

Once the total team cost is determined, it is divided equally by the number of players on that team.  Deposits and payments are non-refundable, as accepting a position on a team is a commitment to share in the total cost of that team for the full season.  Final costs are calculated as soon as all rosters are complete and the tournament schedule has been determined.

WHO WILL TRAIN MY PLAYER?

Next Revolution Volleyball is home to a knowledgeable, experienced and successful staff of coaches with a wide variety of volleyball backgrounds. Our club includes coaches who have played at the Division I, II and III levels and coaches who have experience coaching at the middle school, JV, Varsity and college levels. Several of our coaches have also had an opportunity to participate in postseason play at National level tournaments like AAU Nationals in Orlando Florida.

Our coaches attend annual coaching conventions, workshops and clinics to continue to stay current in their knowledge of the sport. We encourage you to read more about each of our coaches on their individual team pages.

Next Revolution Volleyball requires coaches to be background checked as well as IMPACT and Safesport certified in accordance with USA Volleyball and Old Dominion Region standards. Coaches are also certified through the CDC "Heads Up Concussion" concussion training annually.

How far away are tournaments?

Single day tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are generally within 90 minutes of Roanoke, though some teams may travel to locations such as Richmond.

Other tournaments can be as far away as Florida for our Open teams or as close as Virginia Beach. Each team's schedule is communicated very early to help with planning for each family.

What do USAV, AAU and ODR mean?

USAV (USA Volleyball) is the primary governing body of volleyball in the country. Many tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are sanctioned by USAV.

The ODR (Old Dominion Region) is the specific region within USAV that Next Revolution is a part of based on our geographic location. All players must register with USAV/ODR and AAU while completing their required online modules in order to participate in the travel season.

All NRV coaches (age 18 and older) are required to undergo a background check through USA Volleyball as well as complete training through SafeSport .

AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is another sports organization that provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

JVA (Junior Volleyball Association) much like AAU provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

If I am selected for a team what happens?

Next Revolution requires that all players submit an initial deposit in order to secure their roster spot. This deposit is non-refundable and a part of each player's contract as this is a commitment being made to your team.

Anyone who needs assistance may contact us at nextrevolutionvb@gmail.com to discuss alternate payment schedules, etc. prior to further installments being due.  We are happy to work with families that need alternate arrangements made; we just ask that you reach out to us.

Are there any fundraising options?

Next Revolution works to provide several fundraisers throughout the season. The local Shamrock Festival in March also provides players with a fundraiser through selling advertising to local businesses.  Their sponsorship form is available on our Forms/Policies page.
